Multimedia and Interactive Pathology Reporting Empowered by Digital Pathology - Innovations in Communicating the Value of Pathology and Connecting with Our Clinical Teams and Patients

Background: Pathology and Laboratory Medicine (PLS) play a critical role in the health care like the role of central nervous system to the human body. With the exciting advancements in diagnostic pathology and how enriched the pathology reports have become, it emerges a great need of effective communication of the pathology results to the clinical team to guide effective patient care using innovative digital tools. In addition, although pathology reports are required by law to be made accessible as soon as they are available to patients, the reports are not user-friendly to non-medical professionals. However, it's important to engage and empower the patients who are the drivers of their own medical journey. In a patent-centered care model, the collaboration of patients and their clinical teams is known to deliver better clinical outcome. Methods: Through collaboration of pathologists, radiologists, and informatic scientists, multimedia and interactive enterprise imaging reporting applications and roadmaps are underdevelopment at the Moffitt Cancer Center and the HIMSS (Healthcare Information and Management Systems)-SIIM (Society of Imaging Informatics in Medicine) Enterprise Imaging Community. Results: Innovative Google earth-like enterprise imaging patient portal or QuadcordEHR provides patient easy access to whole slide pathology images using cell phones and enhanced understanding of their pathology reports. Innovative Dynamic Tumor Board Enterprise Imaging Launchpad is improving the connecting of the multidisciplinary care team in weekly tumor conferences by enabling access of whole slides pathology images in real time of discussion. The HIMSS-SIIM enterprise imaging community developed a while paper on multimedia and interactive reporting. Conclusion: Whole slide imaging is the entrance point to the enterprise imaging system and community. With imagination, creativity, and collaboration, digital pathology will continue to empower us to discovery innovative ways of improving advocating the influence and impact of pathology and connecting with our clinical teams and patients.
