Reading vs Measuring: The Pathologists' Conundrum

Abstract

Plenary Abstract - PathologyVisions 2022The core mission of the Pathologist in medical patient care is as an integrator of information related to assessment of the patients' tissues. While we need to integrate all diagnostic information, we are uniquely in charge of obtaining information from patient tissue (including blood). As such, we must not only obtain and integrate this information for optimal patient care, but also evaluate the methods and techniques we use to optimize the accuracy and reproducibility of the information we provide. In this lecture, I will review the evaluation of pathologist information collection methods in the context of Digital Pathology including both digital interpretation of routine histology as well as immunohistochemistry. Then I will discuss the challenge of deciding when to rely on traditional subjective information and when objective information should be sought to optimize patient care.

Objectives
