Digital Pathology and Augmented Intelligence Transformation – To Go Fully Digital or Not?

Digital Pathology (DP) and Augmented Intelligence (AI) are reshaping clinical practice, research, and education at an accelerating pace. With over a decade of advancements behind us, now is a pivotal time to reflect on progress and chart a course for the future.

This session, designed for physicians, including pathologists, scientists, trainees, and industry professionals, brings together thought leaders from the Digital Pathology Association (DPA) to explore the practical and business dimensions of DP and AI. Speakers will address current challenges, barriers to adoption, and actionable solutions, while outlining a forward-looking framework for transformation. Attendees will also gain insight into DPA’s accomplishments and available resources. Following the presentations, a live Q&A session will provide an opportunity to engage directly with our experts. Participants are invited to connect with DPA leadership for networking and professional development opportunities.

Learning Objectives

  • Rethink the approach to digital transformation in pathology
  • Discuss the roadmap for implementing DP and AI in an academic setting
  • Explore the essential components of integrating AI into clinical workflows
  • Identify low-barrier solutions that facilitate digital adoption
  • Highlight recent milestones and initiatives of DPA

Rethinking the Path to Diagnostic AI: Practical Solutions for Today’s Labs

Despite years of promise, adoption of digital pathology and AI has remained limited by cost, IT interoperability, complex buying processes, and the perception that full digital transformation is required. This presentation reframes the challenge by showing how AI can provide immediate diagnostic value through lower-barrier solutions and standardized approaches to interpretation. By addressing both operational realities and economic incentives, including the role of pharmaceutical partnerships, this talk highlights practical ways to bring AI into routine pathology today while building scalable pathways for the future.

Building Roadmaps for Clinical Utility of AI: Importance of Validation and Value-Based Impact

Artificial intelligence is transforming clinical decision-making by enabling more accurate, objective, and personalized care from complex, multimodal data. Validating algorithms at scale before clinical use requires access to institutional datasets of patient cohorts to ensure generalizable and unbiased performance. Equally important is demonstrating value in outcomes and cost reduction, as future reimbursement will depend on validated, value-based evidence. This presentation will provide general insights into strategic roadmaps for validating AI-driven clinical decision tools for clinical implementation, followed by examples of collaborative AI initiatives at SUNY Upstate Medical University, which involve academic and industry partners.
