Digital Pathology: Focus on Patients

The ability to digitize glass slides into whole slide images (WSIs) opens up a whole new world for Pathologists.  The most obvious and simple application is providing a single slide or a few slides for remote consultation; this allows remote intraoperative consultation or rapid on site examination (ROSE) for cytology aspirations, as well as access to experts for a second opinion of difficult cases, all of which enhance the outcome for the patients involved.  Integration of WSI’s with a laboratory information system allows pathologists to transition to a fully digital process to examine a full case, add special stains and immunohistochemistry, and issue a report.  The move to a fully digital pathology department paves the way for consolidation of laboratories to provide the critical mass of pathologists and specimens to support subspeciaization and the depth of knowledge that leads to high-quality pathology.  This transition ensures that the right pathologist reads the right slides at the right time for evey patient. The digitization of glass slides also paves the way for the development of computer-assisted detection of abnormalities and artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance pathologist interpretation. Digital pathology with AI algorithms can improve the speed and diagnostic accuracy of the average pathologist, reduce errors due to fatigue and distraction, again increasing the quality of the diagnosis and prognosis for every patient.  As we move forward we must ensure that the role of pathology is enhanced by harnessing the digital images and AI tools to show patients the importance of pathology in determining their treatment and prognosis, increasing the public visibility and profile of the knowledgeable Pathologists who will continue to serve as the basic and translational science experts of multidisciplinary care teams.

AI in Action: Unlocking the Power of Data for Diagnostics and Drug Development

Jason Hipp, MD, PhD
CEO

In this presentation, we explore the transformative role of artificial intelligence (AI) in revolutionizing the convergence of data, diagnostics, and drug development. Drawing on my diverse experience across industry, academia, and government, we will examine how AI-driven technologies are reshaping diagnostic accuracy, accelerating drug discovery, and enabling personalized medicine. Through real-world examples, I will demonstrate how AI leverages vast datasets to unlock new insights, improve patient outcomes, and drive innovation across healthcare sectors. Looking ahead, I will share my vision for the future, where AI’s integration into healthcare systems will lead to predictive diagnostics and next-generation treatments, offering a pathway to a more connected, efficient, and patient-centric future. Join me as we discuss the opportunities and challenges of this convergence and the profound impact it will have on the future of healthcare.

Driving Impact: A Look at the Digital Pathology Association
