Join us for this upcoming DAPA Grand Rounds, "Navigating the Diagnostic Challenges in Inflammatory Bowel Diseases: Pitfalls and Mimics", where Dr. Liao will lead an insightful session on managing the complexities of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD). This session will cover the key diagnostic features distinguishing Ulcerative Colitis from Crohn’s Disease, highlight common deviations from classical presentations, and address the mimics most frequently leading to misdiagnosis. Dr. Xiaoyan Liao is a Professor and Senior Associate Consultant at Mayo Clinic in Arizona, specializing in gastrointestinal and liver pathology. She earned her MD from Peking University and PhD from UCLA, completed AP/CP training at UC San Diego and a GI/liver pathology fellowship at Mount Sinai, and previously served as Liver Pathology Service Director at the University of Rochester Medical Center. An internationally recognized pathologist and educator, Dr. Liao has authored numerous publications, lectured widely, and received multiple honors and awards, including the 2026 USCAP Stout Award for Best Publication.

Wei Zheng, MD, PhD

Associate Professor

Emory University  

Dr. Zheng is an Associate Professor of Pathology at Emory University and a subspecialty GI and liver pathologist with expertise in histopathologic diagnostics and translational research. His scholarly work centers on integrated histogenomic approaches to GI and liver diseases, with many publications in high-impact journals. In addition to his clinical practice and research, Dr. Zheng is committed to medical education and mentorship, developing educational materials to support continuing education in pathology. He also serves on multiple national and international educational committees, as well as the editorial boards of many scientific and pathology journals, contributing to the advancement of the broader pathology community.
