The potential benefits of digital pathology are enormous. The existence and broad content of the Digital Pathology Association conference speaks to this. Migration to digital practice involves and affects many stakeholders, many systems, and many processes, making it a challenging endeavour. The good news is that this is not a completely de novo problem and you are not without resources to draw upon. DPA and SIIM (the Society of Imaging Informatics in Medicine) have established a relationship to share information, experience, and best practices across their two communities. Some aspects of digital pathology are unique while others are common to, or at least analogous to, medical imaging informatics in other specialties, some of which have accumulated decades of experience in "going digital" and making imaging part of the enterprise. The common aspects represent technologies and efficiencies that can be used off the shelf, or adopted and adapted. The unique aspects represent details that can be used to improve enterprise systems to better support pathology needs. This session will highlight SIIM resources relevant to the digital pathology journey, and present technical and clinical/operational experiences from a recent digital pathology adoption project at a large academic hospital. Our communities work best when we share and learn from each other.
